The Teenage Ninja Turtles are four turtles that are trained as ninja warriors. They live in the sewers of New York and fight crime. They are highly skilled martial arts experts. Leonardo could win against an army of ninjas all at one time. Michelangelo is the most athletic. Raphael is the strongest and quickest. He is also the longest lasting and always gets back up in a fight. Donatello tries to solve problems without fighting. Each turtle has a mutant side that is activated by stress. The concept for the Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles was created in 1984 as a comic parody of a 1980′s Marvel X-Men comic that featured teenage mutants. It was published with a limited run of 3,000 copies. This caused the comic to be an instant collector’s item and months they were selling for 50 times the original cover price.
In 1987, playmate, Toys came out with Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles action figures. On Dec 1987, the first animated television series started on Saturday mornings. The turtles were now forever in pop culture history. The Ninja Turtle likeness was on everything from candy dispensers to skateboards. In 1988, it became a regular series with some new and different characters added.. In 1989, the series started on weekdays, in addition to the Saturday show. In 1990, the series switched to CBS. The Saturday morning show switched to 1 full hour. In 1990, they came out with a live action movie.
In 1991, they changed the theme song to a techno beat. They also changed the format to more action packed episodes. The series ran until November 1996 and was cancelled. In 1997-98, the turtles starred in live action series. They added a fifth turtle named “Venus De Milo”. He was an expert in the Arts of the Sinobi. The series was not a hit with the turtle fans. Nickelodeon bought the rights to Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles, In 2012, they started the third animated series. This caused a huge revival of the turtles popularity.
